Fixture whips are the short runs of conductors that connect a outlet box to a luminaire in ceiling installations. When these taps are run through flexible raceways in suspended ceilings, the code limits how long that whip can be. The idea is to keep the taps and any splices inside a proper enclosure and to minimize exposure of flexible conductors to damage, strain, or pulling forces in the ceiling space. Six feet provides enough length for practical installation without crossing into a longer, more vulnerable run.
